Renate Backstrom

Renate was born in 1941 in Germany and immigrated to the US in 1964 to pursue her love of flying. After several years she became a flight instructor. However, once she got married her priorities changed; but her love for flight and adventure never left her.

For 30 years she was self-employed - and recently after selling her business she has decided to experience other avenues of adventure: one of which is mountain climbing.

She has climbed a couple of 14 thousand foot mountains in Colorado, and last year she was on Kilimanjaro and made it to 17,500 feet. She has since been longing to reach the top, and she thought what better way than to do it on a Peace Climb! She will be joining The Everest Peace Project with her niece, Miriam.

She currently lives in Houston, and the highest she can climb there is on the rigging off the Tall Ship Elissa where she is a volunteer crew member.
